Bigelow’s Blatantly
Bungled Biology Blog
We’ve been working on a phylogeny for mollusks, which is
basically great because among them are some of my favorite organisms hands-down
– octopuses. So far things are going well, both gels took stain well (which is
a small blessing in and of itself) and there wasn’t so much blurring that any
of the bands were unreadable. We haven’t fully compared all of the bands yet,
so I am curious about which organisms other groups have chosen to analyze and
whether they have gotten around to comparing their bands yet. It was clear from
our lab report that our error analysis was not complete enough, so this time
the aim is to more fully deconstruct the procedure and make a discussion of our
errors that is more thorough. Currently, the staining process was the most
significant deviation from the procedure – we left our gels in for 52 minutes
longer than the procedure called for, which could have had several
consequences. It does not seem to have much affected our gel, however.
