Group Research Project- Individual Blog #2

In our group, we are comparing proteins in a Chicken's leg, breast and heart to proteins in a Turkey's leg, breast and heart. We wanted to know if our hypothesis that proteins found in body parts of the same functions in closely related organisms are more similar than proteins found within an Organism of different parts and different functions is supported by experimental data. Even though we expected and predicted that proteins found in a chicken's leg would be more similar to protein's found in a Turkey's leg than they would be to proteins found in breast and heart within a Turkey or a chicken, we were astounded at the level of similarity between a turkey's leg and a chicken's leg. The thickness and length of the protein bands were almost the same and this was true for the other two body parts (breast and heart). We predicted this to happen but were surprised at how close the similarities were.
An error that we did for the second time we ran the gel was that we didn't leave the muscle samples in the laemmli solutions for up to five minutes as it was stated by the lab procedure in order to enable proteins to be extracted enough. We separated the solution from the muscle samples about 1-2 minutes of addition. This error was shown in our results because we had thicker and clearer bands in the first gel than we did in the second week even though they were pretty similar. This is something that we definitely have to include in our error analysis because it was important that we had as much clear results if not better for the second gel as we did for the first gel to support our hypothesis.
