Blog Post Assignment #2: Discussion and Error Analysis

The gel from our first lab was neatly separated; however, generally it was fainted than the gel of Merisa's group (we both did research on marine organisms). About the second lab, the bands were more stained but there were also some smears but not hurt the results. In the second lab, according to Gwen’s suggestion before lab that we weighed out all of our samples to get an exact amount of what we put in the tubes. Dena recorded and showed out that the average sample weight was 0.2g but the Mussel’s foot muscle was less (about 0.1g) and the Clam muscle was more than average (about 0.3g). From the weight record, we can conclude that the amount of protein sample has impact on the gel result. As we see the difference between Mussel and Clam lanes that the Clam bands were much darker clearer than those on Mussel lanes. That could be one of our artifactual error in the lab.
In the first experimental lab, we did on Shrimp, Octopus, Clam, Mussel, and Scallop. What was different in the second time was about the Mussel. By the lab day, all of the Mussel in lab’s tanks were dead. As I observed there were only 2 mussels on the material tray. The lab instructor said that we could skip the Mussel or used their foot muscle instead of the adductor muscle as we did in the first lab. Because the different part so there might be various types of protein would appear.

Question for other group: Have you weighed out your sample and compare that along with your experiment result?
