Research Project Blog #1

I will be researching how the scallop, mussel, clam, octopus are related in mollusc phylum, also, the relationship between the four mollusc samples and the arthropod sample, shrimp. Working as a group, we will use the same protocol from fish protein lab, which is running a gel electrophoresis by collecting the proteins from each samples’ muscle tissue. In order to see if our hypothesis was supported. The background of building a hypothesis is to view each sample’s phylum and class, the shrimp will be the outgroup in our phylogeny tree, since it is in arthropod, having a really different exoskeleton compare to the others which are in mollusc. Scallop, mussel, clam and octopus are in the same phylum, we expect to see the they are sharing the some similar proteins shown in the gel, then determine how close among the samples in mollusc by comparing their common protein.
